HOST A STUDENT. MENTOR THE FUTURE. ENCOURAGE A CAREER IN MEDICINE.

DOWNLOAD INFORMATIONAL FLYER/FORM HERE

This unique one-week medical field experience provides aspiring healthcare professionals with hands-on exposure in a real-world clinical setting. Selected students will spend approximately 40 hours (5-8 days) in a physician’s office or healthcare workplace, shadowing physicians and medical professionals while gaining meaningful insight into the day-to-day operations of a medical practice.

Students will actively participate in both administrative and clinical tasks such as taking and recording patient vital signs, clerical processing, scribing, filing, updating patient records, and observing patient care. Through this immersive experience, participants develop a deeper understanding of the vital roles played by every member of the medical office team.

Eligible participants include high school juniors and seniors, as well as freshman community college and university students (ages 16–22, with a focus on ages 16–18). A rigorous screening and selection process ensures that only highly motivated students with strong academic performance and two recommendations are accepted. Prior to placement, all students receive comprehensive training through our program partner and must provide proof of required vaccinations (or exemption documentation) and an updated TB test within the past year.

By hosting a student, physicians and healthcare professionals have the opportunity to inspire the next generation of medical leaders while strengthening the future healthcare workforce in our region.

Physicians or medical professionals interested in hosting a student for a week or more, please complete and submit the information form to Alison at aelsner@sbcms.org no later than MARCH 3, 2026.
