Virtual Grand Rounds

Social media use among kids can be a cause of great worry by parents, physicians and policymakers worldwide. While current discussions center around screen time measurements and risk-based messages, this messaging can lead to guilt and shame internalized by kids and families. A growing number of voices are encouraging a change in this approach to instead center on youth and their health. In this virtual grand rounds, Osman Yousufzai, M.D., MPH, Ambassador for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), will discuss the evidence and literature behind the AAP Center of Excellence's 5Cs framework of media use that can be used to talk to kids about screens, how to define problematic media use and its signs, and better approaches to management. From the California Department of Public Health’s Center for Infectious Disease, James Watt, M.D., MPH, will also discuss infectious disease epidemiology including measles, COVID-19 and other emerging public health issues.
