Over the past several months, we have seen unprecedented changes in public health leadership at federal entities like the CDC and advisory boards making national policy recommendations about vaccinations, preventive health services and newborn screening, among others. In the face of these changes, this month’s Grand Rounds will present a conversation with Erica Pan, M.D., MPH, California Department of Public Health Director, and Rita Nguyen, M.D., Assistant Public Health Officer for Population Health about federal changes and California recommendations.

As a result of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the current epidemiology of COVID-19, measles, avian flu, and other emerging infectious diseases.
- Summarize national vaccination guidelines and analyze how these recommendations are evolving in response to public health trends.
- Evaluate California’s approach to vaccination recommendations and formulate effective communication strategies for discussing these with patients.
- Apply clinical decision-making frameworks to newborn screening and genetic testing in the absence of a centralized advisory board.
- Interpret and assess the scope and impact of recent public health policy changes at both national and local levels.
